IWG and UNDAW collaborate on new women and sport publication

26.02.08

Following close liaison with the UN Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) a new publication in the Women 2000 and beyond series has recently been launched at a parallel event during the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York on 28 February 2008.

Panelists at the launch included governmental officials, representatives of international organisations working on women and sport, women and girls active in sport as athletes, as well as journalists, managers and trainers, and those working to use sport to promote women's empowerment.

IWG members featured prominently at the launch with the following people involved:

- Johanna Adriaanse, Co-Chair
- Dr Carole Oglesby, IWG Senior International Advisor
- Lydia La Riviere, Consultant on Gender and Diversity
- Dr Kari Fasting, IWG - WSI Representative
- Carol Garoes, IWG Africa Representative
- The Hon. Minister Dato Seri Azalina Othman, IWG Asia Representative

This is a very exciting initiative as it is the first time in history that the UN has dedicated a full publication on women and sport recognising that sport can be an effective tool for women's empowerment and development.  The publication contains many case studies about the social empowerment, self confidence and commitment building that sport can bring to women’s lives as well as skills such as team work, negotiation, leadership and communication.

A key theme of the publication is addressing gender equality through:
- access and participation;
- leadership and decision making;
- employment opportunities;
- women’s sport and media; and
- eliminating violence against women, exploitations and sexual harassment.

The publication is currently available in English and will soon be available in French and Spanish. Copies of the document are available for download here.

The IWG would like to congratulate UNDAW and the contributions of Dr Carole Oglesby and WomenSport International in particular on the development of this great resource.
