Raija Mattila has worked for nearly forty years as a decision-maker and in executive assignments in the sport sector. She has worked at the Finnish Ministry of Education since 1979, as Director of Arts and Cultural Heritage Division of the Ministry from 2000 to 2002 and as Director of the Sport Division from 2002 to 2009. Raija Mattila, M.Pol.Sc, has represented Finnish sport on the international stage for decades. Among her other duties, Mattila chaired the Council of Europe Committee for the Development of Sport from 1996 to 1998, and was in charge of promoting sport themes in the Ministry of Education during Finland's EU presidencies in 1999 and 2006.

Raija Mattila has had an active role in promoting national and international equality work concerning sport. She has chaired several equality workgroups, executing their proposals, acting as a lecturer, and supporting the Spikes Award (equal opportunity in sport) and mentor training for female executives.

Ms Johanna Adriaanse (Australia)

Senior Lecturer of Human Movement and Sport Management

University of Technology, Sydney

Johanna A. Adriaanse, born in Amsterdam and residing in Australia, is Director of Human Movement and Sport Management in the Faculty of Business at the University of Technology Sydney.

As an educator in sport and physical activity for more than twenty-five years, she draws on experience gained at a range of institutions in the Netherlands, Italy and Australia.

She is a researcher in and public commentator on gender issues in sport and physical activity. Her most recent projects include 'women on sport boards' and 'role models in sport for adolescent girls'. Apart from her former role as chair of the IWG 2006 - 2010, she is also on the Executive Board of WomenSport International and former President of WomenSport and Recreation New South Wales.

Clemencia Anaya Maya (Colombia)

Dean of the Colombian Olympic Academy

President of both, the Colombian Association for Women and Sport and the Women's Sport Commission of the Colombian Olympic Committee

Clemencia is the Dean of the Colombian Olympic Academy and an Executive Board member of the Colombian Olympic Committee. Moreover, Clemencia currently holds the position of president of both, the Colombian Association for Women and Sport and the Women's Sport Commission of the Colombian Olympic Committee.

Born in the city of Bogotá, Clemencia is a professional in Physical Education and Journalism. Her sports background as an athlete involves participation in the basketball national team as a player and coach. She was also the representative pf Colombia in the Olympic Forum: Sport and Universal dialogue in Barcelona in 2004 and General Director of the Opening and Closing Ceremoniesof the XX Centro American Games, celebrated in Cartagena, Colombia in July 2005. Moreover, she acts as a guest speaker on sports congresses and conferences, such as the Women Sport Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2007 on a regular basis.

Dr. Evelina Georgiades (Cyprus)

Chair, European Women and Sport

Evelina is Chair of the Cyprus Sport Organisation ‘Women and Sport’ Committee. She graduated from Glasgow University with a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Exercise Science and Medicine, and was subsequently offered a Research Associate post at the same institution. During this time, she published her work in a number of peer-reviewed scientific and academic journals. She moved back to Cyprus in 2003, after having been appointed Director of the Cyprus National Olympic Committee (NOC), a position that saw her overseeing all operational aspects of the NOC, in addition to holding key leadership posts in the Cyprus team that participated in the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Mediterranean Games and the Games of the Small States of Europe (she was, for example, appointed Chef de Mission at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games). During her NOC appointment, Evelina was also a member of the National Anti-Doping Commission and the National Olympic Academy.

In 2007, she was recruited by one of the Cyprus’ largest law firms, where she currently holds the position of Director. Parallel to this, she lectures at one of the country’s private Universities, teaching Physiology to Nursing students. She continues to be involved in operating in sport on a national level – on a voluntary basis – through her appointments as a Member of the Pierre de Coubertin Commission of the Cyprus NOC, and Chair of the Cyprus Sport Organisation ‘Women and Sport’ Committee. 

Evelina has always been actively involved in sport and was a member of the national Athletics team (Track and Field) for a number of years, representing Cyprus in international and regional competitions.  She was also the holder of junior records in her events.

Dr Tansin Benn (England)

President, International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW)

Professor, School of Education at the University of Birmingham

Tansin is a Professor in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham, England. She has been on IAPESGW's Executive Board since 2005 and is a representative on the International Committee of Sports Pedagogy (ICSP). 

In August 2008, she was elected onto the Executive Board of ICSSPE. She has been a major contributor to physical education in schools and universities in the UK for over thirty years. Tansin has been an honoured member of the national subject association for physical education (afPE UK) since 2003. Much of her contribution has been in physical education teacher training. In addition to her education focus she has contributed in the world of sport, notably women's artistic gymnastics as coach, international judge and member British Gymnastics Association Technical Committee. 

Her main research interests are in the field of gender, ethnicity and religion in the UK and internationally. She won a prestigious Leverhulme Research Fellowship award in 2008 to work with women in teacher training in Oman, which led to meeting many new friends and colleagues in the Middle East.

Dr Kari Fasting (Norway)

President, WomenSport International 

Professor, The Norwegian School of Sport Science

Dr Kari Fasting is professor at the Department of Cultural and Social Studies of the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, in Olso, Norway. She became the first elected chair of this institution and served as rector from 1989 to 1994. She was also the first president of the Norwegian Society for Sport Research. From 1985 ti 1991 she was a member of the Women's Comnmittee in th Norwegian Confederation of Sports representing this organization during the first six years of the European Women and Sports Group (1990-1996).

She is past president of the International Sociology of Sport Associationb, and one of the founding members of WomenSport International. Professor Fasting's main research area is women and sport, and she has written more than 300 publications.

Ms Matilda Mwaba (Zambia)

Founder and Executive Director, The National Organisation for Women in Sport, Physical Activity and recreation (NOWSPAR)

Matilda Mwaba is a founder and Executive Director of the National Organisation for Women in Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation (NOWSPAR) in Zambia; she was the first female president of the Zambia Judo Association and the International Kicking AIDS Out Network, served on the National Olympic Committee and the National Sports Council of Zambia. Her key concerns are women’s participation in leadership and harassment of women and girls in sport.

Ms. Valiollah Saint-Louis Gilmus (Haiti)

Current responsibilities

  • Director of physical activities and sports at the MJSAC (Ministry of Youth, Sports and Civic Action) for the Republic of Haiti, she is in charge of training of executive officers.
  • International coordinator for ‘Working Group (GTCF)’, she is responsible for the promotion and participation of women and young girls in youth activities and sports within the CONFEJES, (Conference of Ministeries of Youth and Sports of the French Speaking Countries).
  • Regional coordinator for Area E (Indian Ocean, Asia and Caribbean) for the GTCF within the CONFEJES 
  • National Delegate to the CONFEJES for MJSAC’s ‘Woman, Youth and Sport’ 
  • President of ANOH, (National Olympic Academy of Haiti)
  • Active member of HOC, (Women's Commission of the Haitian Olympic Committee)

Professional and Sports profile

After playing volleyball during her elementary and secondary academic years, and making it to first national division and then national team of Haiti, Valiollah became a member of the women's volleyball team at the University of Montreal (Canada). She also participated in handball games competitions as well as group gymnastics sports demonstration in Senegal.

Her sports and physical education credentials also include a Master’s degree and License in the field of Sciences and Technologies for Physical Activities and Sports, as well as a Master's degree in administration of sports bodies.

After holding official public functions in Haiti since 1985, Valiollah became appointed in 2008 to the position of Director of Physical Activities and Sports for the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Civic Action. To date she continously engages herself in implementation of sector policies and management activities related to her position, while devoting her efforts in encouraging the concrete involvement of women.

While responsible for training her administrative staff, she pays particular attention to equitable gender participation in activities aimed at the development and expension of youth in the world of sports.

Profil sportif et professionnel

Après avoir joué au volleyball au niveau scolaire, en première division nationale  et en équipe nationale d’Haïti, Valiollah a été membre de l’équipe féminine de volleyball de l’université de Montréal. Elle a également participé à des compétitions de handball et au groupe de démonstration de gymnastique sportive au Sénégal.

Dans le domaine des Sciences et techniques des Activités Physiques et des Sports, elle est détentrice d’une licence, d’une maitrise d’enseignement et d’un master spécialisé en administration des organismes sportifs.

Fonctionnaire public depuis 1985 en Haïti, Valiollah a été nommée, en 2008, Directrice des Activités Physiques et des sports au Ministère de la jeunesse, des sports et de l’Action Civique. Elle consacre son temps, tout en veillant à une implication certaine des femmes, à la mise en œuvre des politiques du secteur et à la gestion des activités liées à son poste.

Chargée aussi de la formation des cadres de sa direction, elle accorde un intérêt particulier à la participation équitable des genres aux activités visant au développement et à l’épanouissement des jeunes du monde sportif.
