The 3rd World Conference on Women and Sport was held in Montreal Canada from 16 - 19 May 2002. The theme of the Conference was "Investing in Change". The conference drew over 550 delegates from 97 different countries.
The legacy of this World Conference was the "Montreal Tool Kit" which has been published in English, French, Spanish and Japanese and is available for download.
The IWG is very proud of the legacy for the 2002 World Conference on Women and Sport - the Montreal Tool Kit. Many people are working in isolation and with limited resources, and yet around the world many individuals and organisations are bringing about exciting changes resulting in fairer opportunities for girls and women in sport and physical activity. A consolidation of successful strategies and tools for change are contained in the Montreal Tool Kit.
The Montreal Tool Kit is a reference manual that contains 20 tools to help delegates in their challenges to bring about change in their own community, organisation, region, or nation.
The tools and resources included in this document support evidence that sport and physical activity have the capacity to enhance health and well being; build leadership; social and democratic skills; stimulate economic regeneration; help alleviate the negative effects of poverty; improve learning; enhance productivity; and provide people with an enhanced quality of life. Ensuring sport and physical activity is accessible and affordable to all people should be a priority for all decision-makers. However, for girls and women special efforts are needed if the gender gap is ever to be eliminated.
The report From Windhoek to Montreal has been published in three languages - English, French and Spanish and is available for download.
The Montreal Communique, a summary of the conference outcomes and recommendation, is also available in English, French and Spanish. The website for the 3rd World Conference on Women and Sport is still accessible and has many valuable resources available. You can visit the website at www.canada2002.org.
