Challenges in sport participation for young women from culturally diverse backgrounds

On 7 February I was interviewed by journalist Hsin-Yi Lo on a range of critical issues for gender equality in sport. We talked about the existing challenges for young women and girls from culturally diverse backgrounds to play sport and the perennial challenge of the portrayal of women athletes in the media.

Nigeria: Striving for progress in women and sport

The 8th National Conference of Nigerian Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS) was held November 16-18, 2011 in Lokoja, the capital of the Kogi State of Nigeria.  The theme of the conference was “Developing Leadership Skills of Women in Physical, Health Education Sport, Dance and Recreation”.

Kenya: Girls' football tournament tackles gender-based violence 

On December 10, 2011, the Vijana Amani Pamoja (VAP) organization hosted the first Miss Mrembo girls’ soccer tournament. The tournament was organized under the theme of Kujiamini a Swahili word for self confidence.

In memoriam of Josefina Bauzon

The women and sport movement is saddened by the loss of Josefina Bauzon, a  leader in the women and sport in the Philippines  and other international organizations since the 1980s.
