French Minister of Sport hosts 2011 IWG Annual Meeting in Paris

French Minister of Sport, Mme. Chantal Jouanno, served as the host of the 2011 IWG Annual Meeting, which was held in Paris, France May 25-26 in conjunction with an auxiliary event on gender equality in sport held at the French Ministry of Sports on May 27.

French Minister of Sport Mme. Chantal Jouanno presided over a special seminar on ”Gender Equality in Sports” organized by the French Ministry of Sports in Paris, France on May 27, 2011. The seminar was organized as an auxiliary event to the 2011 IWG Annual Meeting, which was likewise graciously hosted by the minister with the aim of exchanging information on national policies to increase gender equality in sport and sharing best practices to promote women’s sport in various countries and regions. The seminar proved to be an excellent forum to awknowledge both the advances made and lingering challenges that the global women and sport movement currently faces.

IWG Co-Chair Raija Mattila awarded the gold medal of French youth and sport

Mme Jouanno, French Minister of Sport, awarded the IWG Co-Chair, Raija Mattila, with the gold medal of French youth and sport on May 27, 2011 in Paris, France.  The medal was delivered in the connection of the 2011 IWG Annual Meeting Auxiliary event, a seminar entitled ”Gender Equality in Sports” and was held at the French Ministry of Sports.

Southern Africa Women and Sport Consultative Meeting in Lusaka

The Southern Africa Women and Sport Consultative Meeting under the theme ‘Violence Against Women in Sport: Stepping Up to the Challenge’ was hosted on April 27-29, 2011 in Lusaka, Zambia.

 

2nd International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development

The second gathering of the International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development took place at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland from May 10–11, 2011. The forum brought together more than 350 experts from the world of sport and development, including national Olympic committees, civic development organizations and governments to discuss sport’s role as a catalyst for development and peace. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was also present at the forum.

The Second Plenary Session of the Sport, Development and Peace International Working Group (SDP IWG) was held in Geneva on 12 May 2011 with a special focus on gender issues in sport.

Physical education and sport are closely related fields but can be separated on the basis of their objectives, types and outcomes. However,  both related fields have their importance in the development, better prospectus and improvement quality of life without any discrimination of gender.  It is a reality and fact that the male and female populations of the world are roughly equal but yet women face countless problems of inequality and concerning their rights to participate in all sorts of activities as men do, especially in the developing countries of the world.
